Course Netiquette

Working and learning online requires certain behaviors that are known as etiquette -- netiquette on the net. The following are expectations for our Digital Teaching and Learning Division courses:

  1. Treat all participants with respect: fellow participants, facilitators, etc.
  2. Avoid using ALL CAPS as it can be interpreted to mean that you are YELLING!
  3. Be careful with personal information -- both yours and fellow participants.
  4. Remember that everyone is learning. Your responses to discussion board topics should be respectful and should further the learning conversation.
  5. In discussion board posts and learning conversations, do NOT monopolize conversations. Be sure that all individuals have an equitable opportunity to participate and share.
  6. Please respond to all inquiries from instructors or fellow students within a timely period (usually 24 hours).
  7. Be aware that communicating online is different from communicating in person. As a result, carefully read your written communications so that your communications are not misconstrued by others. Keep in mind the importance of tone and diction and the role of connotations in your communications.
  8. Remember that there is a human at the end of every communication that you send. Communicate in ways that are professional and respect the dignity of others.
  9. Consider differences in opinions as an opportunity for growth and self-reflection. While disagreements may be expected, respond in a manner that values the ideas of others.
  10. Communications should be substantial in amount and demonstrate the presence of critical thinking. Responding with a simple “I agree” may not demonstrate critical thinking. Include a more substantive response that incorporates critical thinking that engages others in the communication.
